Bull finches and possibly Petrels
The sun was shining over Skagen today and we had a few first season ringing records for the team today. We ringed our first Bull finches (Lille Dompop) of the Autumn. They were lifers for Augustine, which is always worth celebrating. We also caught and ringed some Marsh Warblers (Kærsanger) which Simon thinks may be some of the last of our season, keep your eyes on the blog to see if his prediction comes true. Another notable species was the Lesser redpoll (lille Grasisken), which again was the first of the Autumn for us.
Juvenile Bull finch (Lille Dompop)
Augustine entered the sound recordings of some night time migrating birds for the 30th and 31st of August into Trektellen today, which can be found here: Click here (31st) and: Click here (30th). Take a listen to the Tawny owl, which is uncommon for the region.
We are getting prepared for a night ringing session targeted at Storm Petrels (lille stormsevale), for which many birders will be waiting nearby hoping for a bit of luck to strike again. We are planning another session tomorrow night so there is a good chance we will catch at least one, but let us all hope for more.

Ringing with Henning
We went ringing at Kabeltromlen with Henning Ettrup, unfortunately we didn’t catch a lot of bids this morning. This meant we had plenty of time to show our new Volunteer Robbie how we work and give him an introduction to bird handling. The highlights of the morning were the Wheatear (Stenpikker) and the Meadow Pipit (Engpiber).
In the afternoon I showed Robbie how to enter the ringing data and some other tasks we must do at the station, Rosalina went grocery shopping with Henning. Robbie and I went up the lighthouse for a quick break to enjoy the view and spot some birds from up there, we saw some Terns and Cormorants. Simon came back from his Sommerhaus later in the afternoon where he was for the last days, he also visited the oldest active ringer in Denmark William Carøe Aarrestrup an old friend of his.

New volunteer and a Great Snipe
No ringing today but we did some observing this morning. Augustin saw a bunch of Guillemots. Not much else going on, we did however welcome a new volunteer, Robbie, who will stay with us till December. We look forward to getting to know him!
Augustin and I have been showing him around and have been preparing him for tomorrow’s ringing. We’re excited to see how it goes.
Alex Sand Frich also spotted a Lundsanger today at Ellekrattet in Skagen, pretty cool!

Dobbeltbekkasin og endnu en tredækker!
Today Dorte was shopping with her brother and went for a walk on Grenen. Augustin and I opened the nets this morning at 6 am, and though there were very few birds today, at one round a Common Snipe (Dobbeltbekkasin) stood by the nets and it got surprised to see me, so it flew away and right into the nets, which means I’ve ringed my first Common Snipe today! Not much else is going on today, but we’re excited to welcome a new volunteer tomorrow!
Late in the evening Lisa and Simon whent to the Great Snipe site south of Aalborg in the evening and where joined by Lars Bo, Esben and Karin. They succesfully manged to catch one more individual so the total this season is now four Great snipes!

A wide variety of birds today
Augustin’s day began at midnight when he was woken up by Anders who told him that we captured another Storm petrel! It was a recapture from Norway and there was a looooot of birdwatchers who joined us at midnight at the station to share our joy and admiration for the bird:
I was unfortunately sick today and yesterday evening, but I did however pressure myself last night to see the storm petrel – it was a really big experience. In the morning when Augustin and I woke up to close the nets, a Sanderling was caught and we ringed it before we closed the nets.
Augustin and Lisa ringed today and got two jays, and they even got caught in the same round at two different nets!
Simon did a live video at Jørgen Kabels house for the project “Fugle for Alle” that’s available to watch at their Facebook page. Today’s video was about Jørgen’s method for attracting butterflies. Check out the video to find out how he does it.

Ringing at Jennes Sø with Michel Ancher
Rosalina and I closed the nets for the Storm Petrel (Lille Stormsvale) early in the morning at the beach, Anders and Ib helped us with that, after that we stored the nets in the lab we headed out to open the nets at Jennes Sø. We ringed there in the morning with Michel Ancher, Ellin joined us also and enjoyed her last day of ringing. Unfortunately, we didn’t catch a lot of birds. We had to leave at around ten to prepare the nets in the old lighthouse garden for a ringing tour while doing that we were informed that the tour had been cancelled so we used this opportunity to fix some of the nets.
After that Rosalina drew some bird silhouettes of birds, we have seen on observations recently on a board in the birders club at the lighthouse. I fixed some ringing equipment, prepared everything we need for tonight and finished some tasks from yesterday. Tonight, we will attempt so catch some Storm Petrels again and we will be supported by Anders and Ib like last night, hopefully with the same results.

Goodbye Ulysses hello Storm Petrel
Rosalina and Ulysses opened the nets this morning at Kabeltromlen for a fun morning of ringing in the morning light. We caught our first Goldcrest (Fuglekonge) of the autumn, what a colorful little beauty! After closing the nets, the volunteers went back to the station to get a little bit of rest and to say goodbye to Ulysses, this was his last morning at the Bird Observatory, he will return home and begin is second masters degree in Zurich, Switzerland. We all wish you the best for your future studies and a lot of fun when hopefully visiting the Antarctic for your PhD. It was nice to have you here you will be missed!
In the afternoon Rosalina went to Grenen to hand out some flyers to some tourists for the Grå Fyr Museum and advertise the station while I was out at Kabeltromlen to sew some nets. In the evening the two of us and our guest Ellin set up the nets on the beach again for a new night of catching Storm Petrels (Lille Stormsvale). After that me and Simon drove to a field near Skagen to see if we could find a Great Snipe that has been seen there earlier, unfortunately we didn’t find any birds. As we were about to head to another field, we got a call from Anders and Ib, they came from Kopenhagen to watch the nets during the night for us, with the exciting news of a Storm Petrel in the nets! So we immediately drove back, on our way back to the station we picked up Lisa and I got to ring my first Sorm Petrel! It was a male from the third calendar year with similar measurements to the first one we caught a week ago.

Vandriskse and resting before a long night
We went ringing today and it turned out to be a successful day at Kabeltromlen. We caught 54 birds in total, a juvenile Water Rail (Vandrikse) in the last round wich was a nice surprise when we were closing the nets and 15 Redstarts (Rødstjert), this is a short period where these beautiful Passerines are the dominant species at the ringing. Rosalina practiced her extracting and ringing skills and mastered the Steel ring closing on the Water Rail on her first try! Simon found beautiful Camberwell Beauty (Sørgekåbe) butterfly. Our guest Ellin also joined the ringing and was very interested in our work, in the afternoon she went to a local history museum in Skagen.
In the afternoon me and Simon helped the bike mechanic to get all our broken bikes to fix them. Simon visited Jorgen Kabel, he has a butterfly feeder in his garden to watch them while they are feeding. We all got a bit of rest so we are fit for another night of trying to catch Storm Petrels on the beach.
