Geographically Skagen is one of the very best spots in Northern Europe for migrating birds! The migration of both raptors, passerines and seabirds can be fantastic! Many different species visits every year and around 380 species have been recorded in Skagen. The area is also renowned for offering more rarities than anywhere else in Denmark.
As a field assistant we offer you free accomodation in a new and modern Observatory in one of Denmarks`s most iconic buildings: The lighthouse living quarters by The Grey Lighthouse - with the birds right outside your doorstep.
New volunteers having their first longer period recieve a small allowance (50 DKK pr. day) and get to work with many other committed people at the Observatory. The Observatory values professionalism and solidarity greatly, which gives you the possibility to develop your knowledge, skills and responsibility, but also to have life experiences together with the rest of the team. It is a place of positive energy and high spirits!
We prioritize applicants who can stay for three months or more (season is March – November). Applicants with their own ringing license or with a track record regarding observations of visible migration or bird surveys are prioritized. Applicants with teaching and presentation skills are also valued high. When there is space we also take in newcomers with less experince for training. Shorter periods down to one month is in some periods also possible. The daily work is very versatile with many different jobs, which – besides ringing and observations – includes presentation, instruction, processing data, practical work, special scientific projects etc.
