It's building up for some autumn migration

søndag 19. september 2021
af Robbie Lawler

Today we welcomed Thor for the next week, A Danish intern who is hoping to get to see some rarities this week; let’s hope the birding gods are smiling down upon us. With Simon away, we didn’t get out ringing this morning. Angela, myself and Rosalina went out observing at World’s End this morning.

It was a bit of a slow day in species today, however Autumn is heating up with a few more Razorbills and Guillemots being seen the last week.

We are heading back out ringing tomorrow, so let’s see what these recent high winds have brought onto the tip of Denmark. We have some interesting weeks ahead with a lot of people in and about the observatory, with more sets of eyes let us see if more birds can be found.

Maybe these eyes will help.

Yesterday evening Amelie arrived in Skagen she is a former volunteer from last autumn and will be staying for a week at the station. We went ringing this morning at Kabeltromlen, we didn’t catch a lot of birds but we caugt a Whinchat (Bynkefugl) and a Song Thrush (Sangdrossel) in the first round that was pretty cool!

whinchat.jpg

In the afternoon Rosalina baked some delicious Muffins. Amelie and me went to the city and had a beer at the beach, on our way home we quickly checked Batteriskoven for the wasp spider but we unfortunately couldn’t find them but we saw two Crested Tits (Topmejse) and a flock of Siskin (Grønsisken). When we came back the new volunteer Angela arrived she is from Italy and will be working here until december

Stratego og vind

fredag 17. september 2021

Keep your eyes out to sea

mandag 13. september 2021
af Robbie Lawler

With Simon unavailable to lead the ringing session today the volunteers all went observing at Grenen, being joined by local birder Knud Pedersen, and guest Knud. There were strong northerly winds today which meant that it was a slower day for Sandwich Terns (Splitterne) than it has been the past few days, but we were treated with some great species.

We had some good views of Fulmars (Mallemuk) soon after beginning observations which set the tone for the next 3 hours. There must have been a large amount of fish close to shore today as around 500 Gannets (Sule) entered a feeding frenzy, being joined by several Grebe species, including a Slavonian grebe (Nordisk Lappedykker).

Away from the mass of Gannets we got views of a distant Arctic Skua (Almindelig Kjove) and we were also treated with great views of a migrating Hen Harrier (Blå Kæhøg) coming southwards off the sea.

Halfway through the session today we were joined by our guest Knud, but unfortunately, after around another hour we decided to try and escape the cold winds and headed back to the station; we hope Knud gets to join us on another less windy session soon.

After the session this morning we set about our usual tasks and Rosalina went to speak to tourists at Lands End about our work at the observatory.

We look forward to getting back to rining tomorrow, fingers crossed for more exciting species.

Wind and more wind

søndag 12. september 2021
af Robbie Lawler

After no ringing yesterday we were back out today. Unfortunately, the nice weather seems to have gone and has been replaced with strong winds. Perhaps it was this wind that kept the birds away today as the nets were quite empty. We did manage to catch a Brambling (Kvækerfinke), that formerly has been ringed by Michael at Jennes Sø.

 brmabling.jpg

While Rosa and Augustine were out ringing this morning, I (Robbie) was out observing at the World’s End with local birder Knud. There was certainly a lot of Sandwich Tern (Splitterne) migration activity today with 58 being seen in one hour alone and 117 being seen in total. There were a couple of noteworthy birds, with a Merlin (Dværgfalk) being spotted far out at sea, and a 1st year Caspian gull (Levantmåge) showing well on the beach. A few Guillemots (Lomvie) and a single Razorbill (Alk) were seen on migration today but we are yet to see any high numbers.

A big thanks to Esben who was helping out with ringing the past few days, we hope to see you again soon.

As we say goodbye to another week, we look forward to seeing more spectacular birds over the coming days and weeks as migration continues to ramp up.

Cleaning day and some observations

lørdag 11. september 2021
af Augustin Sticksel

Due to bad weather we unfortunately couldn’t go out ringing today, Esben and Lars Bo closed the nests from this nights attempt to catch a storm petrel (Lille Stormsvale), unfortunately without success. This meant we could sleep in and get some much needed sleep, in the morning we did a bit of cleaning around the lighthouse after that we had lunch and i checked some sheets with rosalina.

 turnstone.jpg

In the afternoon me and Robbie went out for soe observations around the lighthouse and found three resting oyster catchers (Strandskade) a turnstone (Stenvender) and some rock pipits (Skærpiber), very beautiful birds! In the eveing we went out a secont time to the tip and saw some sandwich terns (Splitterne) and a black-headed gullI (Hættemåge). And now at night we are trying to go nightcatching in batteriskoven to catch some birds there.
