A long expected migration day
onsdag 13. april 2022
We were all quite tired from yesterday so each of us left the station at a different time. Manuel was the first at Nordstrand, followed by Robbe, me and Hanelie. There were already quite a lot of people there, we got to meet many birdwatchers and it was really nice to have lots of people around.
We took the laser binoculars with us so we got to shoot quite a few birds today. We stayed the whole day there, through the wind and a little rain, but it was really worth it. Thankfully Simon supplied us with lunch halfway through. Bird-wise it was a crazy day for us! After a full month of slow migration, we finally got a really good migration day! Tons of Scoters (Sortand) on the sea, but also other birds, Teals (Krikand) in high numbers, big groups of Curlews (Storspove), Arctic skuas (Almindelig Kjove), Pintails (Spidsand) and many more! On the land we were equally rewarded, we saw many Hen harriers (Blå Kærhøg) and Marsh harriers (Rørhøg), Sparrowhawks (Spurvehøg) and Merlins (Dværgfalk), Rough-legged buzzards (Fjeldvåge) and Ospreys (Fiskeørn). But the highlight of the day was of course Pallid harriers (Steppehøg)! It was a first for me and Hanelie. We saw more than ten individuals, males and females, and broke the daily record of this species seen in a day here at Skagen! Everyone was very excited about it, also because we saw them many times and very close to us. The Bramblings (Kvækerfinke) were migrating too in the first hours, and we also got to see a few Barn swallows (Landsvale).
Of course, we saw many other species, but I cannot list them all here, I will let you check the link of today's observations at the bottom of this blog!
Simon had to work indoors but was listening to zello and all the calls. So at some point, he joined us at Nordstrand with Lisa. They stayed with us an hour or so to see the Pallid harrier and left. He also cheeked the harbour but there wasn't much to see there.
Our guests, Dorte and Anders, stayed at Nordstrand for the two first hours. Then they left us to try to see the Pallid harriers before us. Unfortunately, it did not work so well, they still got to see a female, but alas no male! We saw them at Nostrand again sometime later. Anders is also preparing a lecture for us, a sea mammals lecture, and we are very excited about it!
Have a good evening,
Alice.
