Many birds and nets

lørdag 19. marts 2022
af Alice Scalzo

This morning, Robbe, Hanelie, and Julie went to Grenen to observe the migration with Knud. They saw many Jackdaws (Allike) and Chaffinches (Bogfinke), and a second calendar Rough-legged Buzzard (Fjeldvåge). But, for the last two hours, the land migration was quite slow. Julie had the opportunity to learn many things about the sea migration from Knud. Esben joined them after a while, and they also met Jørgen, Igor, and Erik. They also installed one more time the trap to attempt to capture the Snow buntings (Snespurv).

In the meantime, I went to the ringing station with Simon and Marion. Simon showed us where the nets were supposed to be and which ones we were supposed to install.
Hanelie joined us there, but on her way she spotted a very interesting and quite rare bird in spring, a Siberian Chiffchaff (Sibirisk gransanger) !! We joined her and were all able to see the bird from a few meters away !
With Esben, who also joined us there, we all went back to the nets to begin installing them.
That's when Simon had a call, and not any call !

The trap left at Grenen had finally caught a Snow bunting (Snespurv) !! We brought it back at the ringing table and Hanelie ringed the bird with Simon's help.
We put up two nets with Simon and Esben's help, and then one on our own.

Marion, Simon, and Esben left afterwards. Marion had a very nice observation of Goldcrests (Fuglekonge) in the garden. They are still working on the raptor GPS project, and had the chance to observe a Golden eagle (Kongeørn).

Robbe and Julie joined us at the nets, we had our lunch there and continued installing nets. At the end of the day we managed to put up a total of ten nets ! Half the work is done, and tomorrow we will maybe finish installing them.
Simon worked on a ringing test for volunteers. He also went to install the next nocturnal migration call recorder. We hope to hear many cool birds as the weather is very nice!
We had a very nice meal that Julie prepared for us, quinoa, sweet potatoes, avocado, chili, feta, and tomatoes, all mixed up together ! It was delicious !
Today was indeed a very good day, unfortunately the nightcatching we were looking forward to was cancelled. We should be able to go on Monday.
