Nightjars

Godaften !

As Michaela kindly introduced previously, my name is Frank, from London U.K, I arrived on Wednesday and will hopefully be here in Skagen up to the 9th of August. After a warm welcome and the premise of the imperial eagle seen earlier in the day, it was already getting exciting, then to be told of nightjar ringing in the same evening was even better.

Once we arrived, the nets were opened around 23:45, plagued by midges around camp, everyone resorted to walking or taking refuge under blankets, but every memory and bite was soon forgotten after the first nightjar was caught. A male at 02:00 caught in the bottom pocket close to the speaker, the midges then continued until the next was caught at 3:30, a rarely caught female, which allowed for a good comparison between the sexual dimorphisms of both sexes as shown in the pictures below. As one of my first birds in the hand, a nightjar doesn't get much better. After the nets were all closed down and packed we headed back to catch up on sleep.

The following day didn't bring much, a 7 am call out for the imperial eagle sadly brought no results for Jonas and Mikkel, me and Jonas then took a walk around Grenen as an introduction around the ringing sites and regular viewpoints which other than a couple of Bitterns also didn't amount to much but still enjoyable none the less with singing yellowhammer, garden warbler, and blackcaps. Other observations in the area included a golden oriole and 2 Caspian terns.
