First Kærsanger and Laima´s last day

onsdag 26. maj 2021
af Michaela Berdougo
Hi folks!

Hope your week is going well. :)

As it was raining this morning, we got to sleep until 7am (!!!). That was incredibly nice, and needed.
Mikkel went observing with our guests, Karen Marie and Søren, at Verdens Ende 1. They had 49 obs and 6 new species!! A flying Bittern (Rørdrum) and a Merlin (Dværgfalk) were some of their highlights. Mikkel was a great help to them, explains how to differentiate certain species for example. They had about a dozen Honey Buzzards (Hvepsevåge) and a Yellow-billed Diver (Hvidnæbbet Lom)!! They were so excited. Karen Marie was also put on the task of counting Scoters (Sortand), but they slowed down soon after that. Hopefully she'll get some practice soon!

In the meantime, the rest of us went to Kabeltromlen and opened nets. It was a very slow ringing morning. Jørgen and Igor joined us, and we caught our first Marsh Warbler (Kærsanger). The lack of sleep makes us lose our minds a bit (or maybe it's just how we are), and we were singing (beautifully) pretty much all of the time... El Diablo, for those of you who have watched Eurovision. Not a great song, but definitely catchy.

After coming home for a short lunch, Simon and the guests took us to Råbjerg Mile, the "walking" dune where we had a lot of fun by rolling down really steep dunes, and where we got to see some different wildlife such as a few species of beetles (cf. pictures), a young Sand Lizard (Markfirben), and a Goshawk (Duehøg). Søren and Karen Marie were really happy to meet Lisa and have some nice chats with her. They also enjoyed seeing us "in the wild" doing random and stupid things, but also how passionate we all were about nature in general as we admired carnivorous plants, insects and reptiles. :)

After our nice stroll on the dune, we went to Jerupstrand where some of us spent our time looking for nice shells as it is a goldmine for them. Laima found a melanistic Viviparous Lizard (Skovfirben), which means it is darker than average as it has more melanine. We also saw some Shelducks (Gravand) and Oystercatchers (Strandskade).

We stopped at the grocery store on the way back, and ordered some pizzas for Laima's last night. Our lovely guests got Laima a leaving present *tears*, we had some white wine and finally tried Cuba Caramel the guys always talked about. I have to say it tastes weirdly good!

Laima's now packing, and we should go to the top of the lighthouse before bed as we haven't done so since we've been here.

It was an incredible day, and this post will have lots of pictures from it. Hope you enjoy them!!
